太平洋戦争当時、野内村には今でもありますが、石油の貯蔵タンクか何基も建っておりましたので、敵の攻撃目標とされて、村では唯一被害を受けた場所じゃないのかな。

空襲警報が発令されると、当時8歳だった母の弟は両親と姉たちと一緒に、自分の家の持ち山に作った防空壕に避難をしたそうです。しかしその場所が丁度、敵の急降下爆撃機が急降下をして来て目の前で爆弾を投下するので、まるで自分達が狙われているようで凄く怖かったそうです。その落とされた爆弾は自分達の隠れている頭上を通過して、海手にある石油タンクと桟橋に命中すると、地鳴りを伴った爆発音と爆風が響いて来て、それが何発も何発も続いたので、耳を塞いで頭を肩に埋めてその恐怖と戦ったそうです。

暫くして爆発音が聞こえなくなったので空を見上げたら、裏山の方向から真っ黒い煙がモウモウと立ち込めていたそうです。それでもまだ飛行機の機銃の音がバラバラバラバラ聞こえたので、飛行機の爆音は聞こえないけど、どこかにいるのだろうと思いしばらくそこに隠れていたそうです。

石油タンクを破壊したのを見届けたのか、敵の飛行機は見当たらなくなったので、大人達が村の様子を確認するために村へ降りたら、敵の飛行機は村中の家に機銃掃射をしたらしく、家の中に入ったら、昼でも暗い家の中に機銃掃射で開けられた穴から、幾筋もの光が射しているので分かったそうです。そして村の墓地も何発か誤爆されたのか、墓地には大きな爆発の穴が開き、爆風で飛んだ墓石が近所の家の屋根を貫いて、居間の中まで飛び込んで来ていたそうです。もしも村人の避難が遅かったら、もっと多くの犠牲者が随分出ていた事だったと思います。（絵・聞き書き：張山喜隆/平成29年3月）
